As one may recall, 1980 Olympic Games took place in
Moscow. Couple of years before this event, The State Sport Committee of the
USSR had decided that it would be more appropriate for domestic kayakers and
canoists to compete using the locally produced equipment rather than imported
western stuff. To give you and idea of
the state of then existing soviet-made boats: they were far behind their
western competitors. In order to implement this decision, it was required to
build a modern plant. Yurmala (a seaside resort near Riga) where a production
facility of above-mentioned “quality” boats had been already in operation was
selected as a construction site. A new modern facility was destined to be
erected in place of the old one.
Alas,
Moscow authorities were reviewing the feasibility project for so long,
that we have received approval for detailed design only by April 1979. That was
too late to build the plant by the time of the Olympics. The idea was buried,
and the drawings sent to a trash basket. That is really regrettable since this
project might have become my top architectural achievement....
